Eating Well

Daniel 1:12-13 The Message (MSG)

11-13 But Daniel appealed to a steward who had been assigned by the head of the palace staff to be in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: “Try us out for ten days on a simple diet of vegetables and water. Then compare us with the young men who eat from the royal menu. Make your decision on the basis of what you see.”


The four Hebrew boys had been selected to be trained and groomed for leadership positions in the royal court of Nebuchadnezzar. As part of their training program they were to partake of the royal menu and eat all of the finest foods in the land. 

However, Daniel requested that they be exempt from the royal menu and given only vegetables and water.  Daniel suggested that the steward compare the four Hebrew boys to the other trainees at the end of 10 days and see if they were not in superior physical condition.  Not only did they Hebrew boys surpass the others physically, but also intellectually as well. 

The above scripture is the basis for the Daniel’s fast in which Daniel suggested and indeed did prove that if you eat a certain way then you will have strength and power for living and performing at your best. 

In the past, I have fasted for both spiritual and physical reasons and have seen amazing results in both the spirit and physical realms.  But I want to encourage you not to just eat well when you are on fast or consecration, but to make lifestyle changes that involve you eating healthy on a regular basis.  When you eat healthy, not only do you feel better, but you are able to think clearly and be more present.

Many of us are so busy living life that we are too busy to eat healthy and society has made it cheap and easy to eat badly instead of eating well.  We are encouraged to grab something on the go while we live our active lifestyles that involve work, play, and taking care of loved ones. 

However, we must remember that our food is our fuel.  So we must be very careful about the fuel we use to run our engines.  Many of the foods that are convenient are full of toxins and empty in nutritional value, so the body can’t do anything with them except turn them into fat.

One thing we can do is take time out to get back into the kitchen and cook.  Another thing we can do is stay away from fast food, bread, and sugary drinks.   

Yes, it cost time and money to eat healthy, but the payback is phenomenal. Eating well is the source of good health!
